More than basic Markdown

Approachable by default.
Powerful when you need more.

MarkerPad keeps advanced document work approachable. The complexity is there when you need it—and quiet when you don’t.

01 / EDIT

A visual editor that respects its source.

Move between visual editing, reading and exact Markdown without maintaining duplicate documents.

02 / REVIEW

Review changes by document block, not only by line.

Compare versions by document structure. Accept a block, reject a section, keep both, restore or branch.

03 / RESEARCH

Citations and bibliographies built into your workspace.

Import BibTeX, BibLaTeX or CSL JSON. Search citekeys, choose CSL styles, generate bibliographies and validate references.

04 / OWNERSHIP

Stored locally by default.

No account is required. Your workspace begins on your device. Google Drive sync is optional and direct when you enable it.

05 / PRESERVE

Take the whole workspace with you.

Export nested Markdown, assets, bibliography, publications, and optional revision history in one validated, portable archive.

06 / RESPONSIVE

Designed for phones, tablets and wide screens.

Read and edit with layouts designed for compact screens, touch devices, keyboards and full-width desktop workspaces.

Markdown beyond the basics

Rich documents can still be Markdown documents.

MarkerPad renders supported Markdown as editable document blocks and preserves syntax it does not recognise instead of silently deleting it.

Ownership is a feature

Your workspace is stored locally by default.

Got questions?

Frequently asked
questions.

Everything you need to know about MarkerPad, local-first document storage, Markdown compatibility, citations, and export capabilities.

What is MarkerPad, and how is it different from other Markdown editors?

MarkerPad is an open, local document workspace designed for writing, organising, researching, and publishing. Unlike traditional editors that force a split between raw syntax and preview, MarkerPad provides seamless visual editing while keeping raw Markdown intact. It also offers built-in citation management, multi-file publication building, and structural block-level revision comparison.

Where are my documents and notes stored?

Your documents are stored 100% locally on your device by default. MarkerPad requires no account, and nothing is uploaded to cloud servers without your explicit consent. Your content remains ordinary Markdown (.md) and standard image/asset files you fully own.

Is MarkerPad free to use, and do I need an account?

Yes. MarkerPad is free in public beta. You can launch and use the complete web app directly in your browser without creating an account, paying a subscription, or installing software.

What Markdown features and syntax does MarkerPad support?

MarkerPad supports comprehensive modern Markdown syntax, including interactive tables, LaTeX mathematics, Mermaid diagrams, footnotes, callout boxes, code syntax highlighting with diffs, task lists, definition lists, front matter, and raw HTML. Unrecognised syntax is preserved safely without silent deletion.

How does academic citation and bibliography management work?

MarkerPad includes native citation support. You can import reference libraries in BibTeX, BibLaTeX, or CSL JSON formats, search citekeys inline, apply Citation Style Language (CSL) styles, and automatically generate and validate bibliographies across your documents.

Can I export my publications to PDF, Word (DOCX), or HTML?

Yes. The publication builder lets you assemble multi-chapter manuscripts, generate a table of contents, auto-number figures and tables, and export finished documents into professionally formatted PDF, Microsoft Word (.docx), HTML, RTF, or a validated portable Markdown archive (.zip).

Can I sync my documents across multiple devices?

Yes. You can optionally connect MarkerPad to Google Drive for direct, private synchronization, or keep your documents in any local folder synchronized with iCloud Drive, Syncthing, Dropbox, or Git.

What platforms and devices does MarkerPad support?

MarkerPad runs in any modern desktop or mobile web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). A dedicated Android early access application is available on Google Play, and native desktop and iOS editions are currently in development.
